Just Enough Luck

Well the Chiefs did enough to win narrowly and they got the unthinkable, help from the officiating crew. A couple of big errors on part of the officials helped aid the final outcome but it took Belichick’s bag of tricks to keep the defending Super Bowl champs even in the game. A strong defensive effort, ice in the veins kicking from Harrison Butker, and just enough offense to hold it all together led to another Kansas City Chiefs victory.

We move on to Denver and it seems like the last time these two teams met the Broncos were riding high on a 2 game win streak and felt that they could get one past their rivals. Well all they accomplished was knocking PM15 out for 2.5 weeks and cost the Chiefs a victory against Green Bay. I get this Broncos team has a little more life with Drew Lock begins center and the Chiefs won’t head to the locker room with 9 sacks after this is all done but I do fully expect a comfortable win for the Red and Gold. I think the Chiefs will score in bunches from both sides of the ball in 42-24 victory.

This week from Denver we selected Little Owl Coffee Roasters. I decided to try some beans from the small African country of Burundi, let’s be honest that’s the only reason I chose this coffee. This are the spiciest smelling beans I have encountered almost a black pepper with hints cardamom and cinnamon bark. After ground they carry over with some lighter notes of vanilla and ground corn. There is something earthy about this almost like damp fall leaves. Upon consumption there is nothing jumping off the tongue, a slight sweetness like dried fruit with a hint of molasses, there is almost no oils on this probably from it being a slightly darker roast. There is just not a lot going on here, it’s straightforward coffee and that’s not a bad thing. When it’s 17 degrees with 30 mile an hour wind gusts in KC this is the coffee you grab and you enjoy every darn drop of it. Thanks Little Owl and if you want to grab a bag of beans check them out as always Go Chiefs!

We Own The West

Some may say this title is a little premature but after what happened at Arrowhead last Sunday I’m ready to declare the Chiefs the 2019 AFC West champs and if you’re counting at home that is 4 in a row. It was a complete dismantling of our rivals from Oakland in what is our likely our last meeting between franchises from Kansas City and Oakland. The Chiefs won from opening kickoff to final whistle in a 40-9 victory. One coffee blogger predicted a blowout and was right for the first time in doing so.

This week is a new chapter in the Chiefs season. This is December, this is the Patriots in Foxboro, this is Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, this is playoff positioning. There is a lot riding on this game. With a win the Patriots can essentially lock up a bye in the AFC playoffs with a loss things get a little more foggy with Houston, KC, and Baltimore all owning tie breakers NEw England could essentially go from having home field advantage to being a wild card team in three weeks. That is the NFL folks. Prediction time. We have a classic and not so much like the AFC championship game in January, I think the D’s come to play in a 28-27 Kansas City victory. Watch for RBs catching footballs and a lot of them in this one.

Sometime great things come in sketchy packages, see photo below, I occasionally dig deep to find some roasters in these cities and I did in Boston where I found Jaho Coffee Roasters, which I believe really thrives in teas and Japanese ice cream but I digress because what came out of this little brown bag written on in Sharpie was delightful. Kilimanjaro an African Blend grown at great heights for unique fruit was and bold flavors. Bright and fruity right off the nose. We had some candy like scents, if you were curious to diabetes might smell like order a bag. After ground we get some more tannin like notes kind of bold like merlot. This light roasted masterpiece is easy drinking fruity like Hawaiian Punch but acidic and smooth like a complex symphonic masterpiece. This one really blew my mind. This goes to show you that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. To try this blend or of their single origins check them out at the link below. Have fun today and Go Chiefs. God Bless.

Kilimanjaro

Once upon a time in Mexico

Boy howdy am I late? It’s been almost 2 weeks since the Chiefs have played and I haven’t wrote anything. I hope those of you who do read this will forgive me. Well it wasn’t pretty but it was effective the Chiefs were seemingly outplayed a majority of the night but made big plays when needed and turned the Chargers over four times in a much needed AFC West victory. Coupled with Jets victory over the Raiders last week the Chiefs have 1.5 game lead in the division with 5 to play.

Speaking of those Raiders the Chiefs can all but mathematically clinch the division this Sunday by going up essentially 3 games with tie breakers and all with 4 to play. It’s Arrowhead it will be December and Andy Reid and the Chiefs are coming off of a bye week. This speaks to me as ingredients for an old fashioned butt whooping. I’ve been wrong both times I’ve predicted one this season but the third time seems like a charm. Our boys are healthy and rested and I expect them to come out firing in a 42-19 KANSAS CITY victory!

We return to Oakland this week on coffee this coffee journey and stop this time at Timeless Coffee Roasters. This selection is their Peruvian Cajamarca Geiner Luden Quinde. Big roasted notes off the nose out of the almost like brewers malt. Ground up this smells like the holiday season, notes of nutmeg and cinnamon and the all American classic apple pie. On the tongue we continue the bold flavors from this medium roast mystery. Dark chocolate and plum fill up the taste buds but leave a surprisingly clean finish. Summed up this a winter morning pick me up and get me ready kind of brew. I would greatly recommend this to any of you. Check them out at their website and have a great week. https://timelesscoffee.com/shop/peru

We let that one get away

As much as all three facets came together a week earlier to knock of Minnesota. There were let downs in very important segments of last Sunday’s matchup in Tennessee. The Chiefs won the turnover battle, put up 150+ yards, had more first downs, and won the time of possession battle and still found a way to lose. We’re less than 3 weeks removed from PM15 dislocating his kneecap and he still was able to go out throw for more than 400 yards and 3 TDs. This is a team that obviously talented but keeps getting in its own way of being successful one. With only a half game lead in the division the Chiefs will have to play their tail off to make the playoffs at this point.

This is a must win and I hope the extra day of rest will allow for some healing especially for our banged up O-Line. I’m still optimistic about this team even with the glaring faults that have been exposed over the last 6 weeks. We play 4 of our last 6 against division foes starting on Monday night and I expect this to be an old AFC West shootout with the good guys coming out ahead 42-35.

This week we are tasting a mild Ethiopian from Verve Coffee Roasters in Santa Cruz, California. Big, bold roasted malt scents hit you right out the bag. Almost like dark brown sugar or molasses, when ground you got more vibrant smells of sweet corn and fresh flowers. These were the more true flavors of this coffee. Never have I had a more tea like experience from a cup of coffee. I was warned of this from the flavor descriptors by the roaster. Though I don’t get the basil on the tongue I could get that from the nose. The citrus blossom and peach tea are right there sitting lightly nestled on the tongue. This is a delicate brew it starts light and finishes the same with only a tad bit of bitterness right at the back of mouth. This one kind of blows my mind because of I hadn’t brewed it I would be hard pressed to even call it coffee. I’m thankful for this introduction and would love this on one of those days I’m a little under the weather, with some Chinese delivery and some reruns of The Price is Right. I definitely recommend this cup to those wanting to venture outside the norm. To check out Yabitu Kona head on over to. https://www.vervecoffee.com/collections/all-coffee/products/yabitu-koba

Next week is a bye week. So I will probably find something local to review or something my wife brings me to try. If you have something you’d like my opinion on message me and I’ll gladly try your product. Peace and blessing and as always Go Chiefs!

A Whole Team Effort

A victory that included big plays in all three facets took place at Arrowhead one week ago. A Damien Williams 91 yard TD tying the longest run in franchise history. A great team defensive effort to hold league leading rusher Dalvin Cook in check. And finally two HUGE field goals by Harrison Butker to tie and finally win on the the last play of regulation. I won’t go out and say that was a must win but it a very large victory that could go a long way to decide where this team lines up in the AFC playoff picture.

Today the Chiefs head to Nashville to take on the Titans. The last of our AFC South schedule where the Chiefs are on 1-2. I feel extremely confident for 2 reason the PM15 is back in the picture and the defense I try so hard to hate is playing good football and is getting fully healthy. No team in the NFL has been hit by the injury bug as much as the Chiefs nor has anybody played a more difficult schedule. I expect the Chiefs to come out early and display their overall talent advantage in cruising and convincing 37-14 victory. Bold prediction moving forward I don’t think the Chiefs lose again until 2020.

Our selection this week is a medium roast Honduran from Steadfast Coffee in Nashville. Siguatepeque Cerro has a very malty and toasty nose straight off the beans that becomes really earthy after ran through the grinder. From the nose to the mouth this brew takes a 180 and turns sweet in a surprising way for my senses. Depths of caramel, dehydrated apple, and sweet milk chocolate start off on the tongue and a creamy complex finish with bits of tobacco and spiced rum at the back of the mouth. This was a fun coffee to drink. I shared it with my family earlier this week as we celebrated the 97 year life of my great grandmother Edna Meyer. It was a hit with a tad bit of feistiness just like her. If you care to give this one a try check them out at their website. Sorry for the late post and Go Chiefs!

Rodgers That

Well at the Chiefs expense I broke a 3 game pick losing streak. The Chiefs offense played well in PM15s absence but it was not enough to keep up with Aaron Rodgers and the Packers O. Punting with a shade over 5 minutes to play was the straw that broke the camels back, I had a feeling the Chiefs wouldn’t touch the ball again and was proven right. If you sit off the ball 8 yards on 3rd and 6 Aaron Rodgers will beat your every time and he did it over and over Sunday night.

I fully expect PM15 to be back in the starting line up Sunday and the Chiefs to break this 3 game losing streak at Arrowhead. I expect the speedy weapons of Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman to have great games in 34-17 Big Big Big Chiefs win.

This weeks selection is a bold Columbian from Dogwood Coffee Company in Minneapolis. Strong aromas of caramels and sweet cream. Notes of vanilla and toffee finish off the nose after ground. There was something familiar about the taste that took me two cuppings to figure out, its cashew butter just a silky, creamy, mouth feel that is super mild but then you have the taste of a full bodied espresso with apple like sweetness and acidity. It’s weirdly complex and just delightful. If you care to give this brew a try go on over to the website and check them out. https://www.dogwoodcoffee.com/collections/coffee/products/colombia-nodier-andrade-2019

Mild High

I’m not above admitting when I was wrong and glad our Chiefs proved me that way Thursday night. Outside the obvious disappointment of PM15 going out with a dislocated kneecap in the second quarter the Chiefs looked every bit the part of a Championship football team. Though I’m not convinced that was the Chiefs front 7 on D or if the Broncos are even considered a CFL team. That was a complete team victory and beat down of a divisional rival on prime time and that’s always sweet to savor.

This week we open as 3.5 point home favorites against the 5-1 Green Bay Packers. Obviously Vegas is putting a lot of stock in last weeks results. The Chiefs do get 10 days of working with new QB1 Matt Moore and hopefully a healthy LT Fisher and Sammy Watkins. If all those things pan and play well I can see the Chiefs pulling this one out but that’s asking a lot. I see a close game and will be pulling all the way for my boys but I see Aaron Rodgers making too many plays when it counts and the Pack leaving Arrowhead with a 30-26 victory.

This week we’re sampling a Papua New Guinea from Luna Coffee Roasters in De Pere, Wisconsin, just outside of Green Bay. An intense nutty pecan and roasted peanut aroma on the nose with some earthy under tones like a damp fall morning. On first sip you notice how mild this brew is with light notes of lemony citrus and raw sugar cane. At the tail end you notice a little more complexity with a tad bit of milk chocolate and something tropical almost like coconut. This is the cup you drink for hours on end at the office or talking with your buddies at the local diner. Nothing overly memorable but your satisfied once your done. Please check this out by visiting and stay up late on Sunday and I watch Sunday night football between the Chiefs and Packers.

I’m starting to take offense to this “defense”

After spending the entire off season addressing the weakness that was known as Bob Suttons defense the Chiefs look like they actually might have taken a step back on that side of the ball. I mentioned last week that Frank Reich and the Colts gave the NFL the blueprint to beating the Chiefs and the Texans took that to heart by running the dang ball. Carlos Hyde took the rock and drudged ahead for over 5 yards a carry all day long and just for fun when the needed a yard or two quick outs and turn around to Deandre Hopkins were there all day. When you let the other team have the ball for nearly 40 minutes, you will lose in the NFL and that’s what has happened to the Chiefs the last two weeks at Arrowhead. I get that your two starting defensive tackles are out because of injury but it’s not like the defense doesn’t know what’s coming there way. It’s time to man up or blow up this experiment and clean house starting with GM Brett Veach. This team is too talented to be pushed around the way it has the past two weeks.

We’re on a short week going to a hostile environment against a team who has won two in a row and can run the football. I don’t have any expectations of anything good happening on Thursday night I fully expect Phillip Lindsay to have a career night in prime time with over 200 yards in 24-21 Broncos victory. I just don’t have any confidence in the line on either side of the ball in protecting our franchise QB or stopping the run. The last two weeks have been super revealing and I think this team is a lot closer to being a .500 team than a SB contender. I would love to be proven wrong.

Good thing this blog is about more than depressing Chiefs football! Our selection this week is from Sweet Bloom Coffee Roasters in Denver. I have been leaning towards specialty and micro lots in my choices and found this Guatemalan-Gesha. This is probably the most eclectic and snobby variety that I have tried so far in this journey. On the nose out of the grinder I got big notes of oak and tobacco with fruitiness similar to new Chardonnay. Upon first sip it’s super fruity like fresh raspberries but the more you drink the more you taste and you start to get flavors of semi sweet chocolate chips and deep richness of a $40 bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon but also the bite of charred oak and the the sweetness settles in again for the finish and your left wanting more and more. It’s like the last bit of ice cream in the bowl, your sad to see it go but so glad you had it in the first place. This is truly an unique brew. I strongly recommend a cup or a carafe for your late night watching experience Thursday night. I will be on a plane to Phoenix to watch Mrs. Meyer receive her masters degree, so I will have to record and watch it later this weekend. I hope to have a coffee review on location from a local roaster in the greater Phoenix area, if you have any suggestions let me know. If you want to buy this coffee or learn more about the roaster check out their site below. Have a great coffee week and here’s to the Chiefs maybe not losing. God Bless!

All The Reich Moves

I’ll be the first to take the blame on this one. I washed my PM15 jersey for the first time last week, I know there has been other losses since I’ve owned the jersey but, I feel the magic of a possible undefeated season falls solely on my shoulders. Other credit can go to Frank Reich and his blueprint on handling the Chiefs. Own the line of scrimmage and run run run the damn ball. The “revamped” Chiefs D looked like Randy Reid’s Pop Warner team out there against a competent O-Line. Unless the Chiefs can figure this out it may go from a dream season to a nightmare in a hurry. The Chiefs were outmanned and outgunned in every facet of the 19-13 loss. We need help along offensive line, at linebacker, and at corner and I think GM Brett Veach needs to take some heat for not addressing these needs via the draft. I honestly think the Chiefs will be fine if they can get healthy but needless to say NFL head coaches just seen the how to video on handling the Chiefs in their current condition and it was not pretty for fans of the Kingdom.

I’ll be honest this game scares me. Deshaun Watson can make plays all over the field. This is an offense that just scored 53 points but also gave up 32. You can probably expect some fireworks in this one. I’ll continue to be the homer and pick the Chiefs in 38-35 win but it would not be a surprise if it went the other way.

This week we had our first reader provided tasting from my good buddy James in Houston. He sent me an amazing bag of beans and wanted to give him a shout out for that. We tried Costa Rica Sonora Honey from Boomtown Coffee and it was a hit. Strong nutty and caramel aromas right out of the bag and through the grinder. Big bold bakers chocolate on the front end of the palate and light lemon and tangerine notes towards the back that makes this a very unique and slightly complex brew. The honey processing where this guy gets his name allows for a slightly sweet brown sugar like swallow that is very easy drinking. There is nothing off putting at all about this brew. Great job Boomtown and thank you James for sending this my way, I owe you some KC beans in the very near future. If you want to check this coffee or any of their other beans check out their website boomtowncoffee.com Losses are never fun but drinking coffee and processing football is and I’m glad I can share it with you all. Have a great week and Go Chiefs!

Rumblin, Bumblin, Stumblin, Fumblin to Victory

It wasn’t pretty or anywhere near where this writer predicted. It may have been the worst the Chiefs have looked over the past 2 seasons but at the end of the day the Chiefs went on the road in a hostile environment, played no where near their level of football and came away with a NFL win. That’s what championship football teams do. Though I have my concerns, and I think I will address those with a quarter season rundown post later this week, this team showed some moxie when it mattered and that should leave all in Chiefs Kingdom excited for the remainder of this season. Game ball goes to Travis Kelce with a solid stat line and just the football where with all to make a heads up play that was SC Top 10 worthy. I’m impressed to see how much he has matured into a professional football player. Also props to my boy Byron “Pinball” Pringle for his second career NFL reception where he got bounced around inside the 10 and held on to the ball.

This week we enter the second quarter of the football season and take on a 2-2 Indianapolis Colts team. Many before the start of the year this could be a dark horse Super Bowl team. Yet expectations dampened a bit with surprise retirement of Andrew Luck. This is still a very capable team to come in to Arrowhead and give the Chiefs a game. There is some depletion of depth in their secondary because of injury and this game is in Primetime so I think the Chiefs will come out victorious. Last week I got a little carried away with my prediction, I do think that the Chiefs win pretty handily, PM15 has proven to shine his brightest on the biggest stages. I feel the Chiefs win this 38-21 behind the big arm of our MVP QB.

Our tasting review this week comes from Tinker Coffee Co. Costa Rica-El Rodeo Honey and boy howdy does that word honey easily describe this one. Out of the bag just sweet aromas of molasses and candy roasted nuts, almonds, pecans, and cashews hit the nose immediately and follow through after being ran through the grinder. The sweetness continues after brewing with big notes of brown sugar and baked pastries. Strong fruitiness of plums and peaches with thin layer of oil on top makes cup go down so easy. This is an easy drinking cup of coffee, one that could easily be enjoyed in the late afternoon or on Sunday evening while watching the Chiefs and Colts. This may be the smoothest brew I have tried on this coffee journey so far. Very solid from first sip to final drop. If you want to give it a try check Tinker out at below. Household MVP goes to my wife Melissa for her generosity in getting us some Chiefs mugs to help liven up the blog, she’s the best. Remember to enjoy your coffee responsibly and Go Chiefs!
